Bird feed and weeds

A week or so ago my summer seed feed for the birds ran. So I thought I'd get the 'winter warmer' to help the birds stay fit and well over the winter months.
Bad idea.
Within a week, the seeds left on the feeder had started GROWING. Make sure you check any seed you buy will not actually 'seed'.
The feeder is right above my Huecheras And Alchamilla mollis, which are now surrounded by hundred of stems with tiny baby leaves sprouting. You have been warned.

  1. This is why we now stick to peanuts for the birds, the old seed feed has been sprouting all around where the birds fed..!!

  2. Another alternative is using suet blocks. The pink one that I think is called berries, has brought in both parrots and a greater spotted woodpecker - both of which have never come into the garden before.
If you want to be really flash, instead of using fastballs, you can make your own. The next time you do a roast or English breakfast with sausages and bacon, tip the hot fat into a small glass or ramakin, tip in a small handful of seeds and if you want be really clever, a 6 inch length of string or twine. Make sure to line your glass etc with tin foil. Put it in the fridge straight away. It's ready to feed our garden friends the following day
